Consent Counts

Current Consent Counts Work

Consent Counts and EOP have merged into one quarterly meeting for the foreseeable future. Both committees’ current goals are aligned, and we cover the same topics in each, so to streamline operations, we will combine the two.

The newly combined Consent Counts and Educational Outreach Committee meets quarterly on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 5:30 PM Eastern.

ย

The MPC on Sexual Assault will be published by the end of this year.

Other Updates

Lobbying

We will provide a lobbying booklet and explain how we will go about it at our next meeting in January. We wonโ€™t have time to lobby in the early 2027 session, so weโ€™ll be aiming for 2028. We will host trainings for State lobby teams in between our general quarterly Consent Counts meeting.

Publicity

Due to the shadow-banning of words like โ€œkinkโ€ โ€œBDSMโ€ and โ€œswingingโ€ and the negative impact on NCSFโ€™s outreach since June 2022, we are rewriting the mainstream press release: Press Release for Explicit Prior Permission. A few thought the title of our EPP card from โ€œconsent to kinkโ€ to: EPP for Consent.

Education

Here is the list of professional conferences where weโ€™ve submitted workshop proposals or requests for Consent Counts to exhibit. The APHA Conference is coming up in a couple of weeks, and NCSF will present our poster on Recent Trends in โ€œConsensualโ€ Sexual Choking.

American Law Institute (ALI) Project

Explicit Prior Permission is approved by the ALI

A summary of how NCSF worked with The American Law Institute (ALI) to help decriminalize consensual BDSM in June 2021.

The ALI Project was necessary because BDSM activity, even where clearly consensual, has been prosecuted under state criminal laws dealing with assault, aggravated assault, sexual assault or interpersonal violence. This summarizes the state of the law prior to the approval of Explicit Prior Permission for consent to BDSM by the ALI.

This Consent Counts Statement was created in 2013 by soliciting the input of NCSF Coalition Partners, Supporting Members and educational/event organizers over a period of two years to ensure that the definition of consent reflects the standards of the BDSM-leather-fetish communities.
